The two officials of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), Alhaji Akeem Olajide, a Senior Assistant Registrar, and the Council’s driver, Gbenga Ojo, who were kidnapped by suspected herdsmen, in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State, have regained their freedom, Saturday Tribune has authoritatively gathered.
Saturday Tribune gathered that the kidnap victims were released in the early hours of Friday, though the exact amount paid as ransom had yet to be known.
An official vehicle of the examination body was said to have been dispatched to where the released victims were, to take them to Ibadan, it was further learnt.
They were reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical examination and treatment, as they were said to have been made to trek in the bush without shoes or slippers.
This was said to have caused serious injuries to the WAEC officials who got pricked on the soles of their feet and their skin by thorns and other prickly plants.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the release of the victims, saying “yes, they have been rescued; and they have reunited with their families.”
The PPRO dismissed the story of eight abducted victims, saying he did not know where the story came from.
“Only two people, WAEC officials, were kidnapped; and they have been rescued,” he emphasized.
It will be recalled that the WAEC staff members were abducted on Wednesday at about 5:00p.m., at Budo Alhaji, a forest reservation area on Igbeti-Igboho road on their way to Saki from Ogbomoso.
They were reportedly on official duty to the area to brief supervisors in preparation for the school certificate examination starting towards the end of March.
