As apprehension heightens in Kaduna and other northern states over the quit notice issued to the Igbos by the Coalition of Arewa Youths, the leader of the group, Yerima Abbas Shettima yesterday assured the Igbos and other ethnic nationalities residing in the north of their safety.
Speaking exclusively to Sunday INDEPENDENT, Yerima, who said the Igbos should live happily wherever they reside in the North assured them that the Northern youths were wiling to stand by the Igbos anytime, anywhere.

Asked to comment on the apprehension caused by the statement and how Igbos resident in the north with no access to social media would get the reassurance from him, Shetima said they relied on the media to get the message across to the people.
“We rely on the media to get the message across and also the government should also join in disseminating the information and provide adequate security,” he said.
The youth leader disclosed that the group and other ethnic nationalities met two weeks ago in Abuja and discussed about the progress of the country.

According to him, “At the meeting which is called Project Nigeria, we concluded that there was the need for us to build a Nigeria of our dreams where everyone, irrespective of where you come from, would be treated equally, where there will be mutual respect for one another.”
Yerima also shares in the view of many Nigerians that the government and leaders are directly responsible for many of the agitations in the country, saying “overtime, we have had a system that is not doing good whereby a lot of Nigerians feel marginalised by the ruling class.”
He added, “The problem is that, if the ruling class had done well, if there had been employment for our teeming unemployed youths, if the government had discharged their responsibilities well where there is equity and fairness and carried the common man along, agitations would have been a thing of the past.”
