Following the success of the maiden edition held in June, the luxury store, Adam & Eve, has announced the second edition of the group exhibition, The Content. But unlike the first edition which lasted just a week, this show dubbed The Content: Harmattan Edition, will run for three months at the departmental store in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.
Art connoisseurs, socialites and others based on the mainland will have an interesting array of paintings and sculptures to feast their eyes on and acquire, when the show opens on October 15 before it ends on December 15.
And like the first, which featured some of Nigeria’s most talented artists, those participating in this latest show are no pushovers either; they represent a mix of young, old and master artists.
Though there are 10 artists in all, three are guests and featured in the earlier show. They are master printmaker and founder of the annual Harmattan Workshop, Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, Professor Bruce Onobrakpeya; renowned painter and former Deputy Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Kolade Oshinowo, and painter Lekan Onabanjo, who doubles as the show’s curator.
Of the remaining artists, two — the sculptor Francis Uduh and painter Juliet Ezenwa– can be classified as old while the rest are young people giving free rein to their creativity in fascinating colours, forms and shapes. They are Damola Adepoju, renowned for his paintings of Lagos’ life and landscapes; hyper-realistic artist, Olumide Oresegun, Emmanuel Stanley-Dudu; graphic designer, cartoonist, illustrator and painter, Ibe Ananaba and Josh Nmesirionye. Each artist is expected to showcase five works, while the guest artists will present only two pieces each.
Speaking at the show’s preview, founder and managing director of Adam & Eve, Mrs Modupe Ogunlesi, explained that the exhibition was a fulfilment of her earlier promise to hold two group shows annually.
The Content, she had said back then, “is going to be a bi-annual event. Ultimately, we would like to have a gallery because we have an upper floor that we can dedicate to a gallery. We have top artists this time because it’s the first one and I really want to tempt lovers of art to come and see, but the next one will have upcoming artists, known artists, as well as top artists.”
Ogunlesi further revealed at the preview that in selecting the works for the show, attention was paid to visual appeal and the underlying message in each work. For her, most of her collectors are not thirsty for art nuances but what appeals to their eyes. “The art will be like our music. It will burst the charts. Our art will transcend reason,” she said.
Ogunlesi also disclosed that on November 12, Adam & Eve would hold its annual Festival of Carols simultaneously with the show as a way of reminding the public to buy Christmas presents in the festive period. During this event, there will be poetry and Bible readings.
Fittingly, plans for an art gallery is not just talk as the store’s upper floor has already been converted and ready to host quality shows.
Clarifying the choice of artists, curator Onabanjo said room had to be given to younger ones because, “you can’t be recycling older artists. We need to have a synergy so that the young shall also grow.”
