The Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy, Enugu, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari, to assent to the bill for its upgrade to a degree-awarding institution without delay.
The Rector of the College, Dr John Emaimo, made the appeal while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Enugu.
Emaimo noted that the bill for the upgrading of the institution, to enable it provide trainings for courses leading to the award of degrees, had successfully been passed in both chambers of the National Assembly.
The rector said that the 62-year-old institution established in 1955, had four schools which offered two courses each.
“Repositioning and upgrading of the college will attract large number of foreign students, reduce capital flight and generate fund from international students.
“It will also enable breakthroughs in international dental market.
“There is high opportunity for setting up international centre in dental education in the college,’’ he said.
According to him, the college is still the only institution offering courses on dental technology and therapy in the West African region and still attracts international students.
“We have a student population of 2,145 while JAMB admission allocation to the institution per year is 660. The total staff strength is over 300,’’ he said.
Emaimo noted that the college needed effective physical development for expansion as well as building of more classrooms, lecture theatres and an auditorium.
“We also need an upgraded and expanded library; research centre and building a road network in the college among others,’’ he said. (NAN)
