Five-time freestyle African champion, Amas Daniel believes winning gold medal at the ongoing Governor Nyesom Wike Wresting Challenge Cup in Port Harcourt will pave way for him to win the African Wrestling Championship coming up next year in Nigeria.
The Wike National wrestling championship, which kicked off on Sunday, will finally come to an end today with the Men’s Freestyle Wrestling event, with the likes of Commonwealth bronze medalist, African bronze medalist and All African Games gold medalist, Mevin Bibo (86kg) and Africa champion, John Emmanuel aka monkey (70kg) try to defend their national titles.
In a chat with NationSport at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Alfred Diette-Spiff Civic Center, Amas, a Commonwealth bronze medalist, who was undefeated for eight years in the 61 category, said he is well prepared for the challenge in his new 65kg class.
“I am prepared for this competition. I know who I am and I know what I can do. You can’t be in your house and become a champion. It is going to be a little bit tough but then, I believe I am going to win.
“I am looking forward to the African championship which I have won five times. I won in Senegal, Algeria and two times in Morocco and I am looking forward for my sixth here in Nigeria,” the Bayelsa wrestler told NationSport.
