SEVENTEEN people were killed on Saturday, with eight others injured in separate road accidents along the Lagos/Ibadan and Abeokuta/Shagamu highways.
According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the accidents, which occurred around 12:25p.m, involved two vehicles, a Volvo truck with registration number LSD 138 XQ, and a Ford passenger 18-seater passenger bus with registration number AAA 886 XR.
Sunday Tribune gathered that the crash occurred when the passenger bus, which was coming from to Ibadan, overtook a vehicle on the highway, collided with the truck coming from the opposite direction.
All the dead were passengers in the bus, while just two people out of the seven who sustained injuries were in the truck.
The dead, seven males and six females, had been taken to FOS Mortuary, Ipara, Ogun State, while the injured were admitted at Ife-Oluwa Plus A Hospital, Ogunmakin, Ogun State.
In another development, two other fatal crashes were reported along Abeokuta-Kobape-Siun-Sagamu highway.
The first accident, which claimed two lives, occurred at Showo village at about 2:29 p.m., when a Toyota Sienna vehicle with registration number KRD 714 EW suffered a burst tyre as a result of overspeeding.
In the second accident on the same highway, another two passengers in a Nissan Serena bus with registration number LSD 679 EQ lost their lives in a lone accident caused by burst tyre.
The Route Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Command, Florence Okpe, said eight other people were injured in the accident.
The driver was said to have ignored the flagged down of the FRSC officials patrol team before the unfortunate occurred.
Okpe said: “A total of two vehicles were involved. A Lagos yellow intra city bus with registration number no AAA 886 XR , a Ford Transit bus travelling from Lagos to Ilorin who on high speed was overtaking wrongfully and colluded with a Volvo truck, black coloured with registration number LSD 138XQ.
“The Ford Transit Bus was flagged down for speeding by FRSC patrol team that noticed the speed of the passenger bus, but he ignored the flag down order and even abused the patrol team with the use of his hand, but unfortunately barely driving five minutes from the FRSC Patrol team that cautioned him for speeding, colluded with the truck travelling from the opposite direction.”
