Dr. Aminu Tambuwal, the Sokoto State governor, recently opened up on the state of insecurity in the country. Tambuwal, who spoke, through an open statement on July 10, 2018, attributed the recurring killings in parts of the country to leadership failure.
The governor, whose statement seemed to be an indictment of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration under President Muhammadu Buhari, lamented that the harvests of deaths were not what Nigerians voted for in 2015.
His statement came against the backdrop of killings of hundreds of Nigerians in Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Kaduna, Kogi, Nasarawa, Sokoto and several other states by herdsmen who also sack communities, rape women and destroy properties, leaving behind them trails of blood and sorrow.
It would be recalled that in a recent attack in Plateau State communities, over 200 were killed by rampaging herdsmen. There was no help from the police and other security agencies until after seven hours. Till date, the killings have not stopped in the nation’s North Central geo-political zone.
Also, several security operatives had been killed by the arms men, thus leaving the sad impression that nowhere and no one was safe.
Tambuwal, the Speaker of the Seventh House of Representatives, canvassed a comprehensive overhaul of the nation’s security architecture, which he said had not been working.
Tambuwal stressed: “The growing spate of mindless shedding of innocent blood, especially of policemen and other security personnel on their lawful duty posts, has brought a new dimension to the reprehensible state of insecurity in the country.”
The governor, who commiserated with families of citizens who lost their lives in the killings, said with the killing of security agents on their duty posts, “the question from every law abiding citizen today is: Who will protect us, when even those constitutionally charged with the responsibility of protecting our lives and property have, themselves, become vulnerable targets of criminals?
“Where shall we run to for protection, when the institutions of state put in place to protect us are being progressively dismantled by opportunistic criminality and the trained personnel are also on the run?”
Looking at the state of affairs in the country, especially in terms of security, would one say that Tambuwal was right in attributing the killings to the failure of leadership?
The Govt Has Lost Focus – Consultant
Julius Edore Ahamudia, a Benin-based chemical engineer and consultant said: “I quite agree with Governor Tambuwal’s view that the administration is suffering from leadership failure. From every available evidence, it is clear that the administration has lost focus, but has been using the fight against corruption as a diversionary tactics.
“Even the administration’s war against corruption is fraught with irregularities because for government to expend the taxpayers’ money to establish cattle ranches for people who are in their private business, is corruption.
“Forcing people to surrender their land to private businessmen who should be doing their business without government’s involvement and interference is nothing but a pronounced corruption of the highest order.
“All these are happening due to lack of direction and focus on the part of the administration, which can only be described and summarised as clear evidence of leadership failure.”
Tambuwal Was Right – PDP Chieftain
Dr. Eddy Olafeso is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Vice Chairman, South West. According to him, “The symbol of authority, which is the symbol of power rests with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria like it is all over the world. It is your strength and ability to pull the people together that actually brings peace and unity in the country.
“This President is known to ignore and when he wants to make statements he would do so outside the shores of this nation. How can you imagine a situation where your President will go outside Nigeria and tell them that the problem of insecurity was because the late Libyan President had trained some militia who had been unleashed on Nigeria?
“What is his duty as Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces? Is it not to protect the borders of the land? Flush out criminals when they make entry into the country. Why on earth will the President who has all the authority to protect lives and property. The man has never accepted responsibility. That is why I believe that governor Tambuwal spoke my mind.”
The Ruling Party Is A Failure – ACD Member
Nzeh Nnakwe Mbadike Ezukwu, Imo State-based Second Republic politician and member, Advanced Congress Of Democrats (ACD), stated: “Nothing can be further from the truth in the statement credited to Governor Amimu Tambuwal.
“All over the world, it is the cardinal responsibility of any government to protect the lives and properties of the citizenry.
“Any government that fails to do this should pack and go. The persistent killings of our people by the Boko Haram group and the Hausa/Fulani herdsmen are a pointer that the ruling party, APC, has failed.”
The Government Is Insensitive – YPP Chief
Nzeh Kelvin Iwejuru Okedinobi – Young Progressive Party (YPP), stated: “The wide spread killing in the country is to me not only a sign of failure of leadership, but also a dear indication of insensitivity by the government.
“The ceaseless killing of innocent individuals and government’s inability to contain the ugly trend has exposed the government to international ridicule and hatred.
“We are now largely mocked and derided as a ship without a captain. I commend Governor Tambuwal for being outspoken despite being of the APC political family.”
Buhari’s Govt Has No Value For Human Life – Lecturer
Timothy Bonyi, a lecturer, said: “Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto attributing the widespread killings in parts of Nigeria to leadership failure is 100 percent right. The number of Nigerians that died in the past three years has surpassed that of any government in the past. I believe, never in the future should Nigerians be massacred as what we have seen under the President Buhari government.
“Talk of the Boko Haram menace, which the Buhari APC government has been deceiving Nigerians for the past three years, made us believe that they have succeeded in chasing out of our territory, the Fulani herdsmen men are now attacking everybody and killing farmers as if Nigeria is their personal property.
“I can rightly say that this government does not have value for human life. They value cows more than human beings. See the level of hunger and impoverishment of Nigerians due to bad managers of our economy. No jobs and that is basically why crime and all forms of criminalities have been on the rise everyday to the extent that even beggars can attest to the fact that they are getting less from people today than the previous years. You have a lot of shortcomings of this government to prove Tambuwal right to have blamed what is happening today on failed leadership by the Muhammadu Buhari government.
“I totally agree with him. When Buhari came into power they assured Nigerians that they would wipe out Boko Haram in three months. Now three years have gone. They are still fighting Boko Haram. All the promises have not been kept. Even the fight against corruption is one sided, targeted at political opponents, while there are more corrupt people in the APC. This government is nothing but a failure.”
