Makurdi / Jos – Six persons, including a police sergeant, were reportedly killed in a beer parlour at Okpoga Roundabout in Opkokwu Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, on Saturday.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benue State Command, DSP Moses Yamu, in a statement made available to Daily Independent on Sunday, there had been sporadic gunshots at the beer parlour about 9p.m on Saturday.
The police spokesman explained that the police immediately mobilised to the scene and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel which forced them to flee.
Yamu said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the yet to be identified armed men were from Ollo community led by one ‘Mathew’.”
Continuing, he said, “Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, has ordered the area commander to relocate to that area, as teams of Operation Zenda, PMF, and Counter Terrorist Unit have been drafted to the area to ensure that the culprits were identified and arrested.
“Investigation has since commenced to unravel the motive behind the attack.”
In a similar development, Undie Udie, Plateau State Commissioner of Police, has ordered residents of Jos’ hot neighbourhoods such as Dutse Uku, Tina Junction, Rikkos, Angwan Rukuba and University of Jos students hostel to stay indoors as fresh violence broke out in these affected areas.
In a statement read on the state radio and made available to newsmen on Sunday evening, the police commissioner said a joint operation of the police and the army was on the way to quell the unrest in those areas of the Tin city.
The fresh hostilities came on the heels of relaxation of the dusk to dawn curfew by Governor Simon Lalong on Saturday in Jos North and South local government councils of the state.
Delegates to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in Jos were stranded in their various venues of primary elections even as Governor Lalong, who was expected to be at Crest Hotel to witness his endorsement for the 2019 governorship race in his state, could not show up as he was said to be attending to fresh security breaches that broke out in Jos on Sunday.
As at the time of filing this report, sporadic gunshots were heard in the affected communities while residents of Dutse Uku and Tina Junction were said to have fled to the hills behind their settlement for safety.
