The entire evening was well hewn in its harmattan serenity as members of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Ekiti State got set for the evening’s reading. The unfettered humming of the airconditioners, standing unperturbed in the four corners of the hall, could be clearly heard.
But the solo humming of the airconditioners was interrupted by occasional claps of the hands of participants in the ANA Monthly Reading, in appreciation of the good job Dr. Olaide Nasir was doing of his materials.
The clap was also a pointer to the fact that the gathering was well appreciated by the participants, and it was this mood that reigned throughout the duration of the intellectual gathering.
The monthly reading, held at the bespoke De Jewels Hotels and Siutes in Ado Ekiti, had formally commenced when the Secretary of the association, Dr Sola Balogun introduced the Guest Reader/Writer, Dr Nasir, erstwhile Head of the Department of Theatre and Media Arts, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). Interestingly, Dr Nasir doubles as the Chairman of the Ekiti ANA Monthly Reading Committee.
DrBalogun had also invited Associate Professor, Dr Lara Owoeye of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Ekiti State University (EKSU) to sit with the guest reader, “as a leading light in ANA, Ekiti State.” Balogun had also invited the Chairman of Ekiti ANA, Akogun Tai Oguntayo to complete the table, following which the event went in full swing.
Before Dr Nasir took the floor, DrTessyAdeseke of EKSU had presented his brief profile, which brought to the fore the fact that he had started his university education at the Department of Dramatic Arts at the ObafemiAwolowo University (OAU) Ile Ife. Adeseke also revealed that Nasir studied for his Masters and PhD at the University of Ibadan and that his major focus is in Applied Theatre.
Dr Nasir had read from two of his numerous works on the occasion. His first reading was taken from his work entitled: “Turbulent Waters”, a play which manuscript he said was already in the works for publication. The gripping play drew occasional reactions from members of his audience, who reacted according to each of the emotions thrown at them from the well-trimmed conversations and well-painted scenarios in the play.
His second reading was taken from his other unpublished play entitled: “The Crashed Web”. It was equally gripping and had tugged at emotions of many of his listeners, going by their immediate reactions and subsequent debate that followed the readings.
Of course the plays are packed with several topical social issues, including drug abuse, polygamy, education, cultism, marriage, family finance, child up-bringing, family cohesion, work-family balance, etc, etc. The highlighted societal issues in the palys caused a plethora reactions that came by ways of comments, advice, disagreements with Nasir’s conclusions; religious postulations and sundry issues around human existence.
The evening and the probing books had caused discussions which led participants to openly discuss some personal experiences from which many others had learnt a few lessons. And these were ignited by the criticism of the books, kick-started by Dr Lara Owoeye. The debates were so widespread that even some of the students, who were also at the event in their reasonable numbers, joined and aired their opinions both of the books and of the social issues they highlighted.
The colourful array of intellect at the ANA November 2018 reading makes the gathering one outing that is worth experienced again and again. There were medical doctors, journalists, theatre practitioners, academics, students and the daughter of the month’s guest reader. Also present was the wife of the secretary of Ekiti ANA, who joined in the exciting debate and boldly disagreed with her husband on some points in the issues.
Indeed, DrOlaide Nasir caused an exciting stir at his reading and had also drawn many out of their cocoons through the issues he had raised in his “Turbulent Waters” and “The Crashed Web.”
