I am thrilled with ecstatic joy to initiate this piece by wishing you a very prosperous and happy New Year, 2019. On the one hand, it is my prayer that you soar higher this year than you did last year. On the other hand, you cannot afford to do what you did last year, expecting a different result. How do I mean? Many folks did not read through just one book last year and they are not planning and willing to read through any book this year, but they want to have a different year. If this sounds like you, your 2019 is already as old as 2018! To have a new year, plan to grow by buying and reading through good books. Also, start walking with those who have been to where you want to travel to and who know what you are trying to know and who are already walking through the door that you are trying to open. Let’s move straight to the business before us at the moment.
Nigerians gag a lot with the issue of leadership. They think they would wake up one day and just find out that Nigeria has moved from 3rd world to 1st. The truth is; Nigeria is not going to become better than the corporate quality of her leaders. Lazy and wishy-washy leaders cannot produce a strong nation. To change Nigeria, you would need to change her current leaders.
If our current set of leaders is retained come next month; then no prayer is going to cause Nigeria to truly move forward as other serious nations are moving forward. Also, it will be a great error to send Nigeria back to where she is coming from. If that happens, then expect a repeat of what happened for 16 years in Nigeria!
There is certainly a dearth and drought of true leadership in Nigeria. Every fiber of our national life is crying for true leaders, leaders who are genuine; leaders who are willing to take responsibility for the present situation and conditions we have found ourselves in Nigeria; leaders who are willing to accept the challenge of nation-building—to face it head-on with integrity of heart and skillfulness of hand as David did. The current president of Nigeria only has what looks like integrity of heart, but he clearly lacks skillfulness of hand! To truly move Nigeria forward, we need a president who has both qualities comfortably residing in him.
Our homes are crying out for men who are shepherds, who have integrity of heart and skillfulness of hand. Our youth are equally begging for leaders who know their onions. It is the absence of leadership that is causing a lot of our “youngboods” to get hooked on drugs. Our resources in Nigeria are being wasted because of lack of true leaders. Every state in Nigeria is heavily rich, but being led by those who are poor in integrity of heart and skillfulness of hand. Also, every community in Nigeria needs true leaders. Only true leaders can give Nigeria that kind of direction she needs.
Why am I writing on leadership at this moment? The sole reason is because many Nigerians do not know that leadership is everything when it comes to national development and real progress that is not stage-managed, as we have been having since Nigeria gave the first-cry as a baby some decades ago. Come next month, Nigerians are either going to change the arrowhead of our promising country or retain him. The choice is up to the registered citizens of Nigeria. Whoever Nigerians choose come next month will definitely have consequences. The person is either going to move us forward as a people or drive us into the woods.
One of the things Nigerians do not understand is the “will of God” when it comes to the issue of leadership. For a leader to be God’s will for Nigeria, he or she must have both integrity of heart and skillfulness of hand. If you cannot find these two qualities in a leader, then he or she is not the will of God for Nigeria. When a religious leader says that someone is God’s will for you, look for the two mentioned qualities in him or her. The era of gulping everything hook, line and sinker is dead and gone forever!
Also, another myth that I need to kick to the land of the silent ones is the wrong belief that everyone who wins an election is God’s will for Nigeria. You can choose someone who is not the will of God. God will not force His will on anyone, but one thing is in no doubt, when you choose someone—who is not God’s will for the country, when he or she begins to play his or her music, you are going to definitely dance to it.
God’s remedy for rescuing Nigeria from the jungle of poverty and backwardness is the discovery and raising of new, trained leaders—who are committed to justice and right way of doing things. For Nigeria to truly become peaceful and prosperous, we would need to first get the issue of leadership right. Until we get the issue of leadership right across every sector of our economy, fools who know nothing about leadership would not stop coming to you, lying to you that they would transform Nigeria in a few minutes. They tell you what you want to hear, so they can steal your power, your vote! This is why I consistently teach that Nigerians need leaders, not politicians who are looking for what they are going to eat.
The first responsibility of true leaders is to first live according to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. When this happens, without opening their mouth, they would become role models that people would gladly and willingly follow their footsteps. Nigeria is shapeless today, because those in the corridors of power have no honor for the only document that binds all of us together. And when this happens, the citizenry cannot but become lawless. The lawlessness in Nigeria flows from the top to the least citizen of our dear country!
For the umpteenth time, how can we raise law-abiding citizens without the use of gun and bullet? It is very simple. Just make our political leaders to live according to our constitution. When politicians become law-abiding, almost immediately, terrorism and corruption will disappear from our land. Until this happens, we will never have a crisis-free nation.
Once again, I do wish you a thriving New Year!
