Osogbo – In a bid to empower youth and reduce unemployment in the country as well as attain sustainability in food production, a substantial number of youths across the states of the federation have been trained to acquire skills.
The youths were trained at a programme tagged ‘National Youth Empowerment Programme in Crop Production, Livestock, Fishery Aquatic Farming, Leather Works, Make-up, Bead Making, Confectioneries and Event Management’.
The programme held at the National Youth Development Centre, Ode-Omu, Osun State, was anchored by the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports.
Addressing the participants at the programme, Solomon Dalung, the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, hinted that the youths, who were trained in skills and entrepreneurship development, would be given start-up grants, and closely monitored by officials of the ministry periodically to ensure strict compliance in line with the objective of the programme.
He described youth empowerment and its multiplier effect as tools for national development.
Dalung, who was represented by Stephen Oduyebo, the acting permanent secretary of the ministry, said an empowered youth with a sustainable means of livelihood would not only create jobs, but also contribute to the peace and security of the nation.
The minister hinted that when youths were positively engaged, there would be reduction in crime and delinquency, which are factors inimical to national development efforts.
According to him, youths are factors that any nation would not want to set aside due to the fact that the innovation, creativity and energy of the youth are aimed at growth and development.
Earlier in her welcome address, Juweratu Olomoko, the programme coordinator and Director, Enterprise Development and Promotion, stated that the training in eight trades across agriculture and vocational skills took place in five of the six centres in the country.
Eradication of extreme poverty and hunger is essential for the Federal Government, hence the empowerment programme geared towards reduction in unemployment and poverty among young people, particularly through entrepreneurship training.
