Guatemalans are still exposed to fine dust particles from the Sahara Desert, Africa, a recurring phenomenon which could cause negative health effects.
According to the Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), the sand entered Guatemalan territory last Thursday and will remain for five days, so preventive measures by people suffering from chronic respiratory or heart disease must be extreme.
Dust in suspension could aggravate the incidence of conjunctivitis, laryngitis or bronchitis, CONRED warned.
Recommendations include wearing masks or a wet cloth handkerchief to cover your mouth and nose, wearing sunglasses and washing your eyes with plenty of boiling water when you feel foreign bodies.
The risk groups identified are newborns, minors, pregnant women, older adults and people who engage in outdoor activities, according to specialists.
Dust particles from the Sahara Desert are less than 100 microns in size, can rise to an altitude of 5 to 7 kilometers and form a mass of hot air that, when blown away by the winds, can reach thousands of kilometers.
