Government and social sectors in South Africa committed to intensify the national campaign against HIV and tuberculosis, and stressed the importance of addressing other social determinants that affect these diseases.
During the South African National Council against AIDS (Sanac), which met yesterday in the province of Limpopo under the direction of Vice President David Mabuza, participants agreed on the need to take action against gender violence and changes in health policy of the country before tuberculosis.
Ministers, heads of provincial governments, leaders of local health systems, social organizations and officials participating in the Sanac meeting received details of the National Strategic Plan (2017-22) of that organization and the International Conference on AIDS to be held from July 23-27 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The Sanac Strategic Plan is the guide to respond to HIV, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases in South Africa.
During this meeting in Limpopo, the Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, referred to the High Level Meeting on Tuberculosis planned at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York next September, the first occasion in which Heads of State and Government they will be under the auspices of the UN for the confrontation with this and other infectious diseases.
The meeting also learned about the progress made in the implementation of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
At the meeting it was confirmed that despite the intensified joint work in South Africa to address these evils, tuberculosis remains the leading cause of death in this nation, despite being a preventable and curable disease.
The problem lies, according to specialists, in the number of TB patients in South Africa who are not under control and therefore do not receive treatment.
In this regard, they called for those cases that are absent in the health system to be diagnosed, treated and reported and Sanac committed to participate in this localization work.
According to Plenglish.com reports, at the opening of this meeting, Vice President Mabuza underscored the need to seek innovative ways to expand Sanac’s structures and increase confrontation with these pandemics.
